Kassiopi and Old Perithia Village

Kassiopi is situated at the North East of Corfu Island opposite the Albanian coast and about 50 minutes from Corfu centre. It’s a very picturesque old traditional fishing village with its own small centre around a scenic harbour and overlooked by the remains of a Byzantine castle where it is also believed that the Emperor Nero once stood. It has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere and it’s lovely place to walk around the small streets which are full of local shops, cafes and restaurants. Take the path around the castle and you will find “Bataria” a small rocky beach of unique natural beauty and crystal clear waters have the chance to capture the moments by taking magnificent photos around the magnificent landscapes.

It’s Corfu’s Oldest Village with records dating back to the 14th century. Once the wealthiest village on the island, by the mid 17th century there were 130 houses of Venetian origin, built entirely by hand surrounded by 8 churches. Originally the village acted as a hideaway from pirate attacks on the island during summer months, ‘to see the sea but not be seen‘. Gradually inhabitants abandoned Perithia and moved to the coast when tourism started to increase. Just a few elderly eventually stayed back to take care of the houses and the livestock, and today only a few people live there all year round, making Old Perithia a no ghost town. A walk around the village is very impressive. Most houses and public buildings were built with the Venetian style.

Today these houses are almost ruined, so visitors will see broken window shutters, rusted doors, crumbling stone walls, closed churches and gardens with broken flowerpots it makes a unique and picturesque surrounding. In the central square of the village there are now a few old traditional tavernas for the visitors, it is definitely an amazing little village that is not to be missed while in Corfu.

After visiting the two of the most beautiful small traditional villages of Corfu and experiencing the unique atmosphere will drive you back to your desired location with care and comfort.
